BGF and KOSID organized a panel discussion within DOKUFEST on harmful hydropower projects in the Western Balkans
Prizren, 6 August 2018 - Balkan Green Foundation/KOSID in collaboration with DOKUFEST organized the annual panel discussion ‘Reflect the Green in You’ which focused on the harmful development of hydropower projects in the Western Balkans.
The panel consisted of: Elton Baxhaku, filmmaker/director from Albania - producer of the “Free Flow” documentary; Besar Likmeta from BIRN Albania; Ena Bavčić from Civil Rights Defenders, BiH; Aleksandra Bujaroska from Front, Macedonia; Fabian Techene from Kosovo Office of WWF Adria and moderated by Visar Azemi from the Balkan Green Foundation.
The panelists discussed about the development of hydropower projects in all Western Balkan countries and how they are becoming an ongoing threat for the environment. The approach of WB6 governments for the development of renewable energy mostly relies on hydropower projects which are located in national parks. The construction of hydropower plants within strictly protected areas is not the exception but rather the rule in the Balkans and this should change! This way of planning will change and destroy the ecosystem, biodiversity and the life of ordinary citizens. Thus, proper public consultation, transparency on the process, respect of human rights and conservation of the nature are a must for a sustainable environment.
